With today’s publication in Japan of a new book by Haruki Murakami, the largest bookstore chain in Japan is implementing a new tactic. As reported by Publishing Perspectives, Kinokuniya has purchased 90% of the initial print run–that is to say, 90,000 of 100,000 copies–in an effort to draw customers to their brick-and-mortar stores and, presumably, away from a certain online retailer. The book is also available for sale on Kinokuniya‘s Japanese website.
